Schizophrenia is a well known mental illness, and when I mean well known I mean just the name schizophrenia. many people don't really know what schizophrenia is in the matter of what symptoms they have and what they go through. Lucky I found a video of a woman who has schizophrenia and discusses what it is like to have schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is found to be in about 1% of the world population. the symptoms of schizophrenia are bizarre delusions, auditory hallucinations, and disorganized speech and thinking. I have also found two videos 1 from YouTube which explains how schizophrenia works biologically and the second video is of Elyn Saks, a woman that has for the better part overcome schizophrenia.

Elyn Saks: A tale of mental illness -- from the inside
"Is it okay if I totally trash your office?" It's a
question Elyn Saks once asked her doctor, and it wasn't a joke. A legal
scholar, in 2007 Saks came forward with her own story of schizophrenia,
controlled by drugs and therapy but ever-present. In this powerful talk,
she asks us to see people with mental illness clearly, honestly and
compassionately.
Elyn Saks asks bold questions about how society treats people with mental illness.
Elyn Saks graduated from Yale and is a professor at USC! I find it amazing that her schizophrenia didn’t keep her down. Listening to her speech truly showed the “sickness” of schizophrenia, but that’s there’s also more. Schizophrenics aren’t just “sick”, but people. Her success in her career showed that people are people regardless if they have a disorder or not. I really like how she describes schizophrenia having shattered minds rather than split minds like multiple personality disorder. This comparison really gives good imagery on how they aren’t the same. Her speech is inspiring to keep moving forward and to help others who have been just stuck in a psychiatric hospital instead of helped in every other possible way.
ReplyDeleteFrom my Abnormal Psychology class, I learned that people who suffer from schizophrenia should not be called schizophrenics. If we call them schizophrenics, then we are not acknowledging them as people who are suffering from a disorder, but labeling them as the disease. Thus I believe it is important to fully understand what these people are going through, and recognize that they are people suffering from this mental disorder, and are not the disease themselves. The video you posted did a good job in explaining what schizophrenia is and gave an informative insight as to what a person who suffers from schizophrenia goes through.
ReplyDeleteWow, she is really an inspiration! I have a relative who suffers from schizoprenia. She had to quit her job and be in treatment care for awhile ever since then she has not been the same, but I see that she has started to become more open. I think this video will really help her and motivate her to continue on with her education and pursue her goals and dreams that she once had before being diagnosed. Great video!
ReplyDeleteThe first video gave a quick overview of what the brain does and how schizophrenia affects the chemicals inside the brain. That was a good quick summary video. But the second video about Elyn Saks was truly inspirational. She has accomplished many things that most people will never be able to do. I was fascinated and totally drawn in the entire time she gave her personal story. It was something I have never heard before. I was impressed when she was able to give quotes from her journals during her schizophrenic episodes. I find it amazing how such a mental disorder can in fact be treated with proper care and medication. I was happy to hear her spread the better side of how people view mental disorders. She is an advocate, survivor, and a brilliant individual who has shared her amazing journey through a complex mental disorder. Her story will always stay in my memory and I plan to find out more information about Elyn Saks and this horrible psychological disorder.
